First Roll of Ilford XP2 Super

I was a little doubtful about this emulsion. But after having tried it, I’m pleasantly surprised by what it can do.

It’s always good to try new things especially where film photography is concerned.

When I first read Blue Moon’s review of Ilford XP2 Super 400, I must confess that I was a little put off when I read that shadows could look a bit dark. For me, that’s always been the telltale sign of some kind of shortcoming. What I look for in a black and white film stock is richness in grey tones and good shadow brightness. Whenever I’ve had the chance to pick up a roll of XP2, I’ve always passed it up.

On my recent trip to Portland, though, my curiosity got the better of me. How good could a black and white chromogenic emulsion that’s processed in C41 color chemistry be?

After having shot my first roll, I have to say I’m quite surprised by this film stock.

I have more thoughts about Ilford XP2 Super 400 posted with my mini film stock reviews.
