These past few weeks, the weather has not been the greatest for getting out and about with my camera. Especially when I’m shooting black and white film, I’ve come to appreciate the gentle grey tones that I can get with the solid cover of an overcast day. But when the sky opens up, I’m more than a little reluctant to go out with expensive or, in the case of my old but very nice film cameras, hard-to-replace photography gear.
Ever since I got my Canon EOS R8, my old Canon EOS M50 has been relegated to second-class status. I’m a little less protective of that little camera than I used to be. So when I felt little drips and drops coming from the sky when I set out on a walk around town late last week, out came the M50. To be sure, I don’t abuse it. But I don’t feel as nervous about carrying it with me amid the thread of rain as I do with my other cameras.
I have my usual walking around, which sometimes make me feel like I’ve fallen into a rut every now and again. I’ve definitely been feeling that way lately. But on that damp and cloudy day, I managed to get a halfway decent photograph.
I’ve been getting more and more bold with capturing images of people going about their day. I’ve been getting bolder, that is, if you’ll allow that photographing the backs of people constitutes boldness. Still, I find that there’s a certain expressiveness from this perspective that you don’t get with a more direct approach.
